Assessment of different sunspot number series using the cosmogenic isotope 44Ti in meteorites

چکیده
Many sunspot number series exist suggesting different levels of solar activity during the past centuries. Their reliability can be assessed only by comparing them with alternative indirect proxies. We test different sunspot number series against the updated record of cosmogenic radionuclide 44Ti measured in meteorites. Two bounding scenarios of solar activity changes have been considered: the HH-scenario (based on the series by Svalgaard and Schatten), in particular, predicting moderate activity during the Maunder minimum, and the LL-scenario (based on the RG series by Lockwood et al.) predicting moderate activity for the 18th–19th centuries and the very low activity level for the Maunder minimum. For each scenario, the magnetic open solar flux, the heliospheric modulation potential and the expected production of 44Ti were computed. The calculated production rates were compared with the corresponding measurements of 44Ti activity in stony meteorites fallen since 1766. The analysis reveals that the LL-scenario is fully consistent with the measured 44Ti data, in particular, recovering the observed secular trend between the 17th century and the Modern grand maximum. On the contrary, the HH-scenario appears significantly inconsistent with the data, mostly due to the moderate level of activity during the Maunder minimum. It is concluded that the HHscenario sunspot number reconstruction significantly overestimates solar activity prior to the mid-18th century, especially during the Maunder minimum. The exact level of solar activity after 1750 cannot be distinguished with this method, since both Hand Lscenarios appear statistically consistent with the data.

Osmium isotope anomalies in Group IVB irons: Cosmogenic or nucleosynthetic contributions
Introduction: Evidence for isotope anomalies in primitive chondrites, and in iron meteorites, have been reported in Mo [1,2], Ru [3], Ba [4], Nd [5, 6], and Sm [6]. Osmium is a highly refractory element for which isotopic anomalies in bulk chondrites or differentiated meteorites have not been reported, yet. Brandon et al. [7] reported Os isotope anomalies in primitive chondrites, with the large...
متن کاملReconstruction of solar activity for the last millennium using 10 Be data
In a recent paper (Usoskin et al., 2002a), we have reconstructed the concentration of the cosmogenic 10 Be isotope in ice cores from the measured sunspot numbers by using physical models for 10 Be production in the Earth's atmosphere, cosmic ray transport in the heliosphere, and evolution of the Sun's open magnetic flux. Here we take the opposite route: starting from the 10 Be concentration mea...
متن کاملEjection (launch) Depths of Lunar Meteorites
More than 130 lunar meteorites have been found in Antarc-tica and other arid regions throughout the world. Even though nearly half of all lunar meteorites are paired falls and the location from which they were launched is unknown, they sample a more extensive area of lunar crust than manned sample returns, thereby providing a vital record of lunar crust materials. To use lunar meteorites to exp...
متن کاملThe heliospheric Hale cycle over the last 300 years and its implications for a “lost” late 18th century solar cycle
A Hale cycle, one complete magnetic cycle of the Sun, spans two complete Schwabe cycles (also referred to as sunspot and, more generally, solar cycles). The approximately 22-year Hale cycle is seen in magnetic polarities of both sunspots and polar fields, as well as in the intensity of galactic cosmic rays reaching Earth, with oddand even-numbered solar cycles displaying qualitatively different...

Introduction: The 182 Hf– 182 W decay system (t 1/2 =9 My) is useful to date early Solar System processes, notably metal-silicate differentiation [1-10]. Hf-W systematics of refractory inclusions indicate that these objects formed with an initial 182 Hf/ 180 Hf ratio of ~1×10-4 and ε 182 W of –3.47 ± 0.20 [6]. Recent high precision studies revealed negative ε 182 W values relative to CAIs for s...
